The Building of the Dalí Museum

Even from the outside, the building that houses the Dalí Museum stands out. The museum building is a unique architectural masterpiece, designed by Dalí himself. It combines different styles and has a surrealistic appearance.

The exterior of the museum is decorated with large eggs on the walls and images of bread rolls on the roof, referring to Dalí’s obsession with symbols and his fascination with the surrealistic interpretation of everyday objects.

A striking feature of the museum is the transparent reticular structure in the shape of a geodesic dome that crowns the building. This dome is now the emblem of the Dalí Theatre-Museum.

Dalí Museum Collection

Inside the museum, visitors can explore an extensive collection of Dalí’s works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, jewelry, and other artworks.

The museum also houses some of Dalí’s most iconic works, such as “Galarina,” “The Apotheosis of Dalí and Gala,” and “The Ghost of Sex-Appeal.”

Several rooms, such as the former stage and the “Mae West” room, decorated with the eyes, nose, and mouth of Mae West, certainly deserve your attention.

In addition to Dalí’s works, the museum also includes artworks by other artists Dalí admired or collaborated with, including works by El Greco, Marcel Duchamp, and Antoni Pitxot.

Fun fact: Everything in the museum was conceived and designed by Dalí himself to provide visitors with a true experience and take them into his unique and fascinating world.

Dalí Museum in the Evening

During the summer months, it is also possible to visit the Dalí Museum in the evening, between 10:00 PM and midnight.

History of the Dalí Museum

The embryo of the Theatre-Museum project began in the early 1960s. Ramon Guardiola, then mayor of Figueres, asked Salvador Dalí to donate a piece of art to the Museu de l’Empordà. Dalí quickly responded that he would not only donate a piece of art to Figueres, but also an entire museum.

The former Municipal Theatre of Figueres, which had been destroyed by fire after the Spanish Civil War, became the place where the Dalinian project would be housed.

From the 1970s onward, Dalí focused all his attention on the museum project, playing a major role in the design and planning of every detail.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum opened its doors on September 28, 1974, and has since become the city’s most important tourist attraction.

Fun fact: To this day, Salvador Dalí is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His works remain popular and are exhibited worldwide in renowned museums and galleries.
