Restaurant Review: Can Ramonet

If you’re searching for the best paella in Barcelona, you’ll likely come across the restaurant Can Ramonet in the La Barceloneta neighborhood. This restaurant is renowned for its rice and seafood dishes and is a classic in Barcelona. I’m a big fan of it myself. In this review, I’ll tell you why.

About Can Ramonet

Can Ramonet specializes in seafood and rice dishes and is located in the La Barceloneta neighborhood, known as Barcelona’s old fishing district. Existing since 1753, Can Ramonet is one of the oldest restaurants in the area.

The restaurant offers a taste of Mediterranean cuisine, with a menu that includes fish and meat dishes, tapas, and, of course, all types of paellas. What sets it apart is its status as an authentic family restaurant.

With the ambiance of an old maritime tavern, it’s a great place for family and friends’ dinners or a meal with your partner. They have an outdoor terrace, but the interior is equally cozy and inviting. Private room rentals and group reservations are also available.

Can Ramonet is open daily from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

My Experience at Can Ramonet

We ended up at Can Ramonet on a weekday afternoon during one of our walks in the La Barceloneta neighborhood. There were five of us, including a child, and we were pleasantly surprised to find space available on the terrace. We sat outside in the sun and perused the menu, which was full of enticing options.

For starters, we shared some tapas: buñuelos de bacalao (cod fritters), croquetas de jamón (Spanish ham croquettes), pa amb tomàquet (bread with rubbed tomato), and, of course, a bomba de la Barceloneta, a type of fried meatball with potato, served with a spicy sauce, originating from this neighborhood.

All the tapas dishes were exquisite, making for a great start.

As the main course, we ordered a fideuà, specifically “fideus a banda,” a paella-like dish made with vermicelli pasta instead of rice. We ordered one for three people, as you usually get a very large paella pan, enough to share.

The fideuà arrived in a large pan with two spoons for serving. Can Ramonet’s fideuà was delicious, and I would definitely order it again.

There wasn’t really room for dessert, so we ordered some coffee and a scoop of chocolate ice cream for the little one. However, the ice cream took a while to arrive as the waiters had forgotten it. Aside from that minor issue, our time at Can Ramonet was delightful, and the service was quick and friendly.

In total, we spent €118.30, which works out to €23.66 per person. I find this reasonable, especially considering how tasty and fresh the food was.

After this experience, I can heartily recommend Can Ramonet, especially if you want to enjoy a delicious paella (or fideuà) during your city trip in Barcelona at an authentic address.
