Review: Bar Tomás de Sarrià

Bar Tomás de Sarrià, also known as Bar Tomás, is an iconic bar located in the upscale Sarrià neighborhood of Barcelona. Generations of Barcelonans flock here for one thing – their patatas bravas! These are the city’s original (and for many, the best) spicy potato wedges. If you’re curious about Bar Tomás and its famous patatas bravas, and whether they’re still worth the hype, read on!

About Bar Tomás de Sarrià

In the middle of the main street of the old village center of Sarrià, Carrer Major de Sarrià, you’ll find this little bar where time seems to have stood still. Bar Tomás looks like a typical Spanish bar for the elderly, but don’t be fooled: they are said to serve the best patatas bravas in Barcelona! And are they tasty? Absolutely, I must admit that I find them very delicious too!

Bar Tomás in Barcelona

Bar Tomás in Barcelona is a true institution when it comes to patatas bravas. This famous tapas dish is handmade here. The potatoes are cut, fried, and drenched in a spicy alioli sauce, the chef’s secret. They’re perfect with a cold beer or a cola. Ideal for an appetizer or as part of a tapas evening.

Since the patatas bravas from Bar Tomás were crowned the best in the city by the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, the popularity of this bar has only increased. It now attracts a diverse and varied crowd: from local residents and workers grabbing their morning coffee to savvy tourists who’ve discovered Bar Tomás.

My Experience at Bar Tomás de Sarrià

As a Barcelona local, I’ve been to Bar Tomás several times, and of course, I always order their patatas bravas. I indeed find them the tastiest in Barcelona. It’s not just the fried potato itself, but especially the sauce that makes these patatas bravas the best. I haven’t found anything as delicious anywhere else in Barcelona, so a visit to Bar Tomás when I’m in the area is a must.

But Bar Tomás is more than just the best patatas bravas. You can also try other tapas dishes like anxoves (anchovies in vinegar), bunyols (cod fritters), ensaladilla russa (Russian salad), or croquetes (Spanish croquettes). Have a look at their counter to see what’s available or ask the waiter for recommendations.

Prices at Bar Tomás are quite reasonable, especially considering its location in one of Barcelona’s most expensive neighborhoods. A portion of patatas bravas costs only €2.40, almost nothing!

Personally, I find it an experience to make the trip here, sit at the bar, and enjoy a coveted portion of patatas bravas amid the lively crowd. It can get very busy, especially on weekends at lunchtime. My advice is to go during the weekdays outside of meal times to enjoy your patatas bravas in peace. If you prefer a livelier atmosphere, come during the weekend for a vermut, and you’ll see how the patatas bravas literally fly off the counter.

Also good to know: they have an outdoor terrace where the sun shines in the afternoon.

My only criticism would be the service, which is rarely friendly or warm. But aside from that, I continue to recommend Bar Tomás as one of the best places to eat patatas bravas in Barcelona.

My Rating for Bar Tomás de Sarrià
